Bladder Symptoms and Bladder Pain

Bladder SymptomsBladders symptoms and bladder pain can be the result of interstitial cystitis (IC). You may suffer from an inflamed bladder and bladder irritation that causes the walls of the bladder to stiffen, making it hard for the bladder to expand to full capacity with urine. The pain may arise in the lower back, abdomen, or perineal area when the bladder has to expand, but should ease when the bladder is emptied.

Bladder symptoms and bladder pain can also signal a urinary tract infection. If you are experiencing painful urination (also known as dysuria) or stinging when urinating, this might be the result of a bladder infection. The pain might feel like a burning sensation. You could also have pain or tenderness in the abdomen or experience a sharp pain in the bladder or urethra that is more than just discomfort from having a full bladder.

You may also experience a constant urge to urinate, especially at night if you are constantly waking up to urinate, which is a condition called nocturia. Other symptoms that may accompany bladder pain include cloudy urine, smelly urine, or blood in urine, known as gross hematuria or microscopic hematuria.

The urethral sphincter muscle surrounds the urethra and opens and closes the bladder neck (which connects the urethra to the bladder) to either release the urine or hold it in. Some of our patients suffer from bladder weakness, due to muscles thickening or stretching out over time. A patient with urinary incontinence will experience the sudden need to urinate. On the other hand, you may experience urinary dribbling or pain with urinary retention (the inability to urinate) due to a blocked urethra or obstructed ureters. Pain might be felt if you have a dropped bladder, or a bladder that starts to sag or has moved out of position. A woman suffering with cystocele, or a prolapsed bladder, can feel bladder pain due to the weakened tissue that has allowed the bladder to bulge into the vagina.

Bladder symptoms and bladder pain can also be attributed to an obstruction, such as bladder stones that have developed as a result of mineral deposits that build up inside the bladder. A bladder tumor that forms as a result of bladder cancer will also cause many of the aforementioned problems that can lead to bladder pain and other abnormal urinary symptoms. Because so many of these bladder symptoms are similar to bladder problems and other urinary conditions, any symptoms should be properly diagnosed by one of our professional urologists to determine the exact cause and the most appropriate and effective treatment for your condition. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) also called prostate enlargement is a common occurrence for men over forty years of age. As the prostate gets bigger with age it closes downthe urethra nor allowing the bladder to empty fully during urination. Through the years the bladder expands, bladder diverticula form, urinary frequency occurs, painful urination, and urinary infections occur.
